If you’re curious about the powerful healing benefits of gazing meditation, this article is for you. Learn how this ancient practice can transform tension, stress and trapped emotions into experiencing your inner Divine.

What Is Gazing Meditation?

Gazing into the eyes of the beloved. Rumi spoke so eloquently about this practice when referring to his sacred sessions with his teacher Shams.

Remember those moments of gazing into the eyes of your beloved? Be it your partner, a child, parent or yourself. Just like Rumi realised, practicing gazing meditation allows the heart to flower.

Gazing, also known as Trataka in yogic traditions, is a tool used in Yogic and Buddhist tantra practices which involves focusing the eyes through intention on a single-pointed object.

With so many distractions like social media, our minds are constantly being bombarded with information. Believe it or not, this takes the mind down a rabbit hole. As the rubbish continues to pile up, our vision becomes tainted.

Gazing Meditation Benefits

According to tradition, it’s believed that when one focuses their concentration upon a single point, all areas of their life will improve.

Practicing gazing meditation allows for a new, cleared vision to emerge as well as gaining a new sense of awareness.

This practice or ‘trataka sadhana’ is similar to the concept of drishti, which is a gazing technique used in yoga practice that develops concentration to find stability and calm in one asana.

In an overstimulating world, full of addictive toys for our eyes and mind, creating calm and stability is a commodity. Our prana or life force wears thin when we scatter our energy.

Directing our attention inward allows re-connection with the true self. For many, this is scary as you are forced to really look at yourself and take responsibility.

Having done this practice for two hours a day for several months, I can personally say that the benefits are well worth it.

Past life karmas were released, tensions that had be stored and waiting to explode melted into bliss and beliefs that no longer served me were transformed into authentic ones. After this sadhana, I emerged more powerful and in love with myself and the Divine.

This is better than a fine wine so perhaps this inspires you to deepen your connection.
