The Journey of a Yoga Teacher: Finding Purpose on the Mat
In the ever-evolving world of yoga, where teacher trainings seem to sprout up like wildflowers and the allure of an idyllic lifestyle beckons, I often ponder – why do I teach yoga? What driving force propels me to embrace this chosen profession? The picture-perfect image painted on social media – exotic locales, lithe bodies adorned in trendy activewear, and a nomadic lifestyle that knows no boundaries – is undeniably captivating. However, the reality extends far beyond the curated highlights.
Well, here are some truths about my reality as a Yoga teacher: I wake up just after 3 am, (me and the local bakers I guess…) don't ask me where the time goes, but I will be on my yoga mat by around 5 am. Teaching starts at 7:30 am and ends at 9:30 am. Bed time happens between 8-9 pm, Five days a week, you can imagine the social life I have in the weekdays….
My journey as a yoga teacher began with a leap of faith – leaving behind the familiar comforts of a career in the service industry, to embark on a path of self-discovery. The transition was not without its challenges; self-doubt and uncertainty plagued me, questioning my worth and abilities. Yet, through the unwavering support of my then partner, Damien and the transformative power of yoga itself, a profound shift occurred.
It was on the sacred lands of Bali that something clicked – an undeniable connection to the ancient yogic mysteries. I immersed myself in study, devouring sacred texts and registering for an intensive teacher training in Thailand. As my knowledge deepened, so did my passion for sharing this holistic practice with others.
For me, teaching yoga transcends the physical asanas; it is a means of cultivating harmony, compassion, and self-awareness – not just for my students but for myself as well. Each class is an opportunity to guide individuals on a journey of self-discovery, empowering them to find balance amidst the chaos of modern life. The profound sense of fulfilment that arises from witnessing transformations, both subtle and profound, is incomparable.
Beneath the idyllic veneer lies a profound commitment – a relentless pursuit of growth, both personal and professional. The pre-dawn hours are a sanctuary, a time for introspection and preparation, ensuring that each class is a masterfully crafted experience. The teachings extend far beyond the mat, encompassing principles of mindfulness, presence, and interconnectedness that permeate every aspect of life.
So, why do I teach yoga? It is a calling that resonates deep within my soul, a path that has guided me towards a life of purpose and service. Through the ancient wisdom of this practice, I have found the means to create a ripple effect, one breath and one asana at a time, contributing to a more harmonious and compassionate world.
