Galungan and Kuningan are amongst the most significant religious celebrations in Bali, taking place twice a year according to the Balinese calendar, which differs from the Gregorian calendar. Galungan, celebrated on 2nd August, marks the beginning of the festivities when ancestors are believed to descend to Earth, and good triumphs over evil.
The preparations for Galungan involve creating offerings, preparing special meals, and arranging flowers and fruits in baskets. People don their best ceremonial attire and bring the offerings to family shrines and important temples across Bali. The entire island witnesses beautiful processions during this time.
Families come together during Galungan for prayers, rituals, and special ceremonies at temples, seeking blessings and guidance. They express gratitude for the wisdom passed down by their forefathers, honouring the traditions kept alive as a mark of respect to their ancestors, gods, and goddesses, bridging the spirit world with the earthly realm. The celebration has been followed since the 11th century and is filled with spiritual reverence and community joy.
Kuningan, which takes place on 12th August, marks the end of the celebrations when the spirits return home. On this day, people can join in traditional prayer ceremonies at local temples, offering prayers and tributes to their ancestors' spirits. Participating in these ceremonies is a way to show respect for Balinese culture and experience the spiritual side of Bali.
Another captivating aspect of the festivities is the penjor ceremony. Penjor are tall bamboo poles adorned as decorations along the streets and in local homes. Observing or assisting local friends in setting up their penjor allows one to witness the enchanting magic of this time.
During the holiday period, Bali is alive with traditional performances, street food fairs, and vibrant celebrations across the island. Tourists can immerse themselves in the local culture, partake in the special and significant ceremonies, and share in the joy with the Balinese people.
